Science is a core subject in our school. It also a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subject and is encouraged further in our school through initiatives such as the BT Young Scientist Exhibition and SciFest.

BT Young Scientist 2020

This year Coláiste Dún an Rí ​is privileged to announce ​that 10 projects have been accepted to compete in The BT ​Young ​Scientist and Technology Exhibition taking place in the RDS, Dublin ​on January 8th-11th 2020. This is a new record for the school. Well done to all the students and teachers involved!

BT Young Scientist Entries

The projects titles competing this year are;

  • Are older generations aware of the rising anxiety levels in younger generations? by Lucy Fitzsimons.
  • An investigation into the prevalence and importance of woodlice in Dun an Ri ​Forest​Park by Shanice Alwell.
  • An investigation into the population of earthworms, nutrient content and organic matter content of organic farms vs conventional farms by Evan O’Reilly.
  • The Kaye ​Effect and how different viscous liquids affect it’ by Aoife Sheriff.
  • CBAs: Less Stress or more mess, a statistical investigation to analyse how effective the Junior Cycle CBAs are at reducing stress in students by Aimee Reilly.
  • A glass of wine is not OK: An investigation into the drinking habits of pregnant women in Ireland by Grainne Kieran and Amber Smith.
  • Psychological experiment to determine whether white noise can impact on learning by Corey O’Reilly and Holly Browne.
  • Chicken feathers as an alternative Insulation b​y Lauren McCabe, Allanah Clarke and Freya Waterson.
  • Should Home Economics be compulsory for Junior Cycle? by Rachel McEneaney, Ava O’Reilly and Lorcan Gogarty.
  • To investigate if birds feel safest feeding on garden feeders high up, at mid-height or low down by Louise Kennedy, Tara Shannon and Sophie Byrne.
