On the run up to Christmas students from the school choir accompanied by their Music teacher, Ms.O'Reilly, took to the street to join the festivities in the town. They gathered outside Bank of Ireland in the centre of the town to sing a variety of Christmas Carols. Many of the public who passed by complimented the excellent singing and good behavior of the students. The aim of the Christmas caroling, aside from spreading the festive cheer, was to raise funds for our extra-curricular programme in the school. The public supported this generously in there donations with Bank of Ireland donating €500 from thier Community Fund to the school. We are overjoyed by the support we received from Bank of Ireland and  the community and would like to take this opportunity to thank your for your continued support.

Students in Coláiste Dún an Ri held a Bake Sale in aid of Kingscourt Social Services. The First Years baked a fantastic selection of baked goods and raised a total of 558.41. Well done all!

On Thursday the 22nd of December all staff and students met in the canteen before we split up for the Christmas holidays. Over the course of the year students have been working very hard in class and completing work to a high standard. There were some students in particular who stood out as they continued to show an excellent standard of work on a daily basis. The staff decided that this effort should be awarded as it is this standard that epitomises the expectations of the school. Below are some of our students presented with awards by their class tutor.




Some individual subject awards were also handed out to students who had excelled at the subject since september.




As part of the Geography Junior Certificate Curriculum students examine two case studies on industry. We choose Gyproc Saint-Gobain as an example of a heavy industry and Butler’s Choclates as an example of a light industry. On Tuesday we were delighted to welcome Mr. Paul Whelan, Head of Human Resources to Coláiste Dún an Rí to speak to students about Gyproc Saint Gobain.

On Wednesday students had the opportunity to visit Butlers Choclate factory. These activities were of huge benefit to students as they learned about inputs, processes and outputs and factors which affect the location of an industry.

As part of science week at Colaiste Dun an Ri, Science Foundation Ireland visited our school to give students an interactive sports science workshop. During this workshop the students worked in teams as they visited different stations to test their speed, strength, power and reaction times. 





The data collected will be used in science class as we move through the course to show students how science can apply to real life.

On Thursday the school was delighted to welcome Mr. Dick Clerkin. Dick is a Chemical Engineer and has worked in different companies before he joined the local plasterboard giant, Gyproc Saint-Gobain in May 2016.

Dick spoke to the students about his job as a Chemical Engineer, the course of study he followed to qualify and how the job has allowed him to pursue other interests whilst still advancing his career.

He then went on to describe the manufacturing process at the plant. This was of great interest to all of our students, primarily because it is a thriving industry in the local area but also because it reinforces what is being taught in geography class with regard to 'Inputs - processes - outputs'




In addition to this, students have been taking part in various science activities each lunchtime during the week including Element Bingo,Guess the scientist and pHet science simulations.


As part of our Home Economics, Geography and Business syllabi, all First Year students at Coláiste Dun attended a tour to Butlers Chocolate Factory in Dublin on 30th November. This tour was very beneficial to students across the three subjects. Home Economics students saw the food industry in action and all that this entails e.g. the processing of raw ingredients, the manufacturing of food, HACCP, health and safety, hygiene protocols, packaging and marketing. Geography students have studied secondary economic activities looking at inputs, processes and outputs. The tour provided students with an example of a light industry and they saw the inputs, processes and outputs of an industry in action. Business students had the opportunity to see how a business is run and all that is involved in running a business.
