On Monday 6th March students were given a guided tour of their new school Colaiste Dún an Rí. The tour was facilitated by  Ganson, the building contractors overseeing the development of the school. The trip was organised as part of Engineering week within the school and the tour was seen as an ideal opportunity to show students a first hand example of engineering in everyday life. There was an atmosphere of excitment and enthusiam amongst both staff and the students as many got to see the inside of the school for the first time. On arrival at the site, students and staff were inducted and and given safety clothing to wear. Students were guided around the site which boasts magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. Students then entered the building and were shown were they would partake in each subject next year. There was an element of surprise at the the progress which had been made in the last few months as many had only seen the external work that had taken place. Many of the students were overwhelmed by the sheer size of the facility.  With the roofing now complete and the windows fitted, internal work is well underway with many rooms having radiators and the first coat of paint in place.  Along the tour students visited sample classrooms which gave students a visual reference as to the overall finish that will be utilised throughout the school.

On the run up to Christmas students from the school choir accompanied by their Music teacher, Ms.O'Reilly, took to the street to join the festivities in the town. They gathered outside Bank of Ireland in the centre of the town to sing a variety of Christmas Carols. Many of the public who passed by complimented the excellent singing and good behavior of the students. The aim of the Christmas caroling, aside from spreading the festive cheer, was to raise funds for our extra-curricular programme in the school. The public supported this generously in there donations with Bank of Ireland donating €500 from thier Community Fund to the school. We are overjoyed by the support we received from Bank of Ireland and  the community and would like to take this opportunity to thank your for your continued support.

On Thursday the 22nd of December all staff and students met in the canteen before we split up for the Christmas holidays. Over the course of the year students have been working very hard in class and completing work to a high standard. There were some students in particular who stood out as they continued to show an excellent standard of work on a daily basis. The staff decided that this effort should be awarded as it is this standard that epitomises the expectations of the school. Below are some of our students presented with awards by their class tutor.

Some individual subject awards were also handed out to students who had excelled at the subject since september.

As part of the Geography Junior Certificate Curriculum students examine two case studies on industry. We choose Gyproc Saint-Gobain as an example of a heavy industry and Butler’s Choclates as an example of a light industry. On Tuesday we were delighted to welcome Mr. Paul Whelan, Head of Human Resources to Coláiste Dún an Rí to speak to students about Gyproc Saint Gobain.

On Wednesday students had the opportunity to visit Butlers Choclate factory. These activities were of huge benefit to students as they learned about inputs, processes and outputs and factors which affect the location of an industry.
