Fergal Boyle BT Young Scientist 2019 This year Coláiste Dún an Rí was delighted to have seven projects, composed of fourteen students, entered into the BTYSE 2019. This was a great achievement for all the first and second year students involved. The following is a list of the projects entered and the category the projects were entered in. Chemical, Physical & Mathematical Sciences An Investigation into the number of Regular Shapes vs. Number of Irregular shapes with 12 sides or less that can be constructed by the use of Euclidean Geometry by Charlie Clavin. Charlie is pictured below speaking to RTE about his project. Biological and Ecological An Ecological Investigation into Dún an Rí Forest Park, Kingscourt, Co. Cavan by Caoimhe Byrne, Illona McCarthy and Eabha Garvey. This project was awarded 3rd place in the Biological and Ecological Junior Group Category. Chicken Feather Insulation by Freya Watterson, Allanah Clarke and Lauren McCabe. This project investigated the insulation properties of chicken feathers. Social and Behavioural Sciences A statistical analysis of the public’s awareness of the danger of positional asphyxiation associated with infant car seats by Ryan Lockwood. This project was highly commended and awarded a rosette for such. Smart Parents? Smartphones by Roisin Cooney. This project explored the perceptions and usage of smart phones by children/teenagers, by both the child themselves and their parents. Homelessness – A crisis that can be solved by Molly McKeon, Sarah Owens and Mary O’Loan. This project looked at the problem and consequences of homelessness on both the individual and society. To investigate if exotic animals are being kept in cruelty free environments by Jessica Dodd and Niamh Sheenan. This project looked at how exotic animals are being kept.
